Our courses cater for all levels and are taught by experienced practising potters. There are only twelve students in each class, so there will be plenty of individual attention during the course. Our classes are a fun, relaxed learning environment where students are given the freedom to be creative and to express their individuality - we love seeing the work that our students create, and our favourite pieces are often the most unusual ones!
WHAT TO EXPECT
During the 12 week course, you will be taught both how to hand build and throw on the potter's wheel. The first six weeks of the course tend to focus on building technical skills, and the last six weeks are for students to experiment, improve on their skills under the guidance of their teacher, and work on personal projects. More experienced students will be given specific guidance and set more advanced projects. Unlike other studios, if you are a returning student, we offer priority booking on the next round of classes, so that you can continue in the same course with your preferred teacher.
Our new six week courses will include all the skills and techniques that are covered in our twelve week programmes, but in a shorter timeframe and with a little less time to play with clay and experiment. The six week programme is perfect for those who struggle to commit to a longer course, but want to learn all the skills needed to make their own beautiful, original pots.
If you are particularly interested in wheel throwing, we recommend booking onto a class at our Hackney Downs studio, which has eight wheels compared to the six at our de Beauvoir studio. Our teachers ensure that students rotate between the wheel and handbuilding/glazing weekly, so that all students get a fair share of throwing practice.
The pace of the course is entirely down to you - if you are interested in a focused learning environment in which to advance your skills and learn new techniques, then we can provide this for you through our professional and skilled team of teachers. Our classes can also be a great opportunity to meet new people, relax, drink tea, and indulge in some meditative making surrounded by plants and positive energy.
You can expect to make between six-twelve pieces during the course. Please note that there is a ‘one plate per student’ policy on all of our courses, as plates take up a larger amount of space in the kiln and we do not have the capacity to fire mass production of flatware.
Due to the many stages involved in the making process, your work may not all be completely finished and fired by the end of the course. You will be able to come back to pick up your completed pieces after the end of your course - we recommend waiting four weeks to ensure that they are all ready. In the event that your pieces are not ready to be glazed in the last class, please speak to your teacher to arrange an appropriate time to come back and glaze them.
Once a piece has been fired, the clay cannot be recycled and therefore there is a small charge of £4 per kg of clay to be fired. We recycle all unfired waste clay at the studio and many of Stine's SkandiHus pieces are made from this recycled clay. Your teacher will point you to the appropriate buckets to put your unwanted waste clay in. Thank you for helping us to look after our environment.
Unfortunately we are not able to offer refunds for courses cancelled by the student with less than 28 days notice before the start of the course (but we will help you try to find someone else to take over your spot, if you have to cancel your class).
We are unable to deal with class enquiries over the phone. If you have any questions, please email firstname.lastname@example.org, and we will get back to you as soon as possible.
