About the Course

Join us this August for three days of wheel focussed fun in our newly refurbished De Beauvoir studio. Whether you’re new to clay or have been throwing for years, this intensive workshop offers space to learn, experiment, and grow in confidence on the wheel.

During this workshop, you’ll be guided through a range of beginner/refresher techniques with time to settle in, then explore form and function, and focus on creating a few pieces you truly love to keep forever. Think of it as a crash course in honing your skills on the wheel where repetition and practice really makes a difference.

The first day will focus on covering the basics from centering your clay, pulling up walls and playing with the fundamental forms of cylinders and bowls. You can go at your own speed and your teacher will be there to help you develop, whichever level you are at. The second day will build on your throwing skills by developing your forms into more advanced shapes, as well as having the opportunity to decorate with slip using sgraffito techniques. The third day will focus on all things turning where you will trim your pieces made in the first two days, learn how to add foot rings and handles and finish all pieces for their first firing.

At the end of the course you will be able to pick your four favourite pieces for us to glaze in the SkandiHus gloss white glaze and fire for you. If there are any additional pieces you would like to keep you can pay for the clay used at £5 per kilo.

If you would also like to learn how to glaze your pieces yourself you can purchase a Friday evening Drop In class where the teacher will show you how to glaze and you can select from the range of in house glazes to use. Your teacher will discuss this with you in the class.

Suitable for adults only.

Materials

The course includes clay, slips and glazes. You’ll be working with our buff stoneware clay and have access to a wide range of tools but if you would like to purchase your own set to keep you can find them available on our website here along with our beautiful aprons.

What to Bring

Please bring clothes that can get dirty, creative energy and ideas!

We recommend bringing a hand towel/tea towel for drying wet hands, a bottle of water and lunch for the Friday class, or we can point you in the direction of some delicious local food options nearby.

We will send you our student handbook prior to the start of the course, with all the information that you need to know.

What if I miss a class?

Please note that we cannot accommodate students making up missed classes at other times, nor can we allow students to swap their classes to another date. Please therefore make sure before booking that you can attend all dates.

A small note on sustainability & values

We do our best to keep things gentle on the planet—recycling materials, using renewable energy, and keeping waste to a minimum. You can help too by reusing your course materials where possible and bringing your own packaging when collecting finished pieces.

We believe business can be a force for good—so alongside running joyful, creative studios, we’re committed to doing things properly:

– Paying all staff London Living Wage or above

– Keeping our spaces kind, inclusive and stress-free

– Supporting causes like the ARC food bank and Ella’s, a charity helping survivors of trafficking

– Donating profits from unclaimed pots to charity

– Planting trees each year with One Tree Planted

Where

SkandiHus, 90 De Beauvoir Road, London, N1 4EN.

Our lovely De Beauvoir Studio is a short walk away from both Haggerston and Dalston Station, as well as Essex Road.

Refund Policy

We’re a small, ethically run business - which means we pay our lovely team properly and keep our classes as accessible as possible. To make that work, we offer refunds up to 28 days before the start of your class. After that, refunds aren’t possible — so please do a happy little calendar dance before booking to double-check your dates!

That said, life happens! If things go sideways:

🤍 Up to 28 days before your class, you can receive a full refund.

🤍 Inside 28 days? No swaps, but you’re welcome to gift your spot to a mate or family member (spread the clay joy!).

Why so strict?
Each weekend, we get numerous last-minute change requests. If we said yes to all of them, we’d have to choose between cutting staff wages or hiking prices - and both options would make us really sad. By sticking to this policy, we keep things fair, keep our team happy, and keep our studios thriving.

Thanks for understanding - now let’s get making! 🤍✨🤍
