One Week Immersive Wheel Throwing Course | Monday 4th August - Friday 8th August (10:00am-4:00pm) 2025 | Improvers | E17 Studio | Intermediate | £600 | Teacher: Deej Amin

Please note this includes a one hour lunch break

About the Course

Join us this August for a week of focussed wheel throwing in our plant-filled Walthamstow studio. Aimed at those with some throwing experience who are ready to take their skills to the next level, this immersive course offers space to learn, experiment, and enjoy the rhythm of working with your hands.

Over the course of the week, you’ll be guided through a range of throwing techniques with time to settle in, explore form and function, with a focus on expanding your abilities on the wheel. Think of it as a creative pause—a little clay retreat in the city. The intention is to develop your wheel throwing skills with intensive practice and refinement of technique under the guidance of our experienced teacher, Deej. Emphasis is placed on making as a means of learning rather than producing pieces to keep. You'll be encouraged to slice through your work to examine wall structures and gain a clearer understanding of form, helping you build stronger, more intentional skills at the wheel.

You will be asked to choose five pieces to keep for trimming practice on the final day. A glazing demo will be optional using practice bisque.

You are welcome to return to the studio by booking a drop in class to finish trimming any additional kept pieces and for glazing your bisque fired work. Clay will be charged at £5 per kilo for any work to be bisque fired.

The course runs across one week in early August, with the last day reserved for either glazing training on practice bisqueware or continued practice on the wheel.

About the Teacher

Deej teaches at all three of our studios. She is originally from Manchester and having been told at school that pottery was only for "serious artists"*, she only had her first ceramics making experience while living and working in Japan years later. She was instantly drawn to the relaxed, therapeutic nature of working with clay, and has been making regularly since completing her master's degree in Japanese Studies in 2016. She came to SkandiHus as a student in 2018 and thankfully never left!

She enjoys experimenting with new forms and colours, and has been particularly inspired by the seascapes seen in her holidays around Japan and New Zealand.

Deej’s classes are always light, bright, and full of creativity! She encourages her students to learn by experimenting, instead of overthinking their designs, and her approach to teaching is patient, attentive and kind. She is a dab hand at making everyone feel comfortable under her expert guidance.

*she obviously now knows how silly this statement is. Pottery is for everyone!

Meet our team and learn more about your teacher.

Materials

On your first day, you’ll receive your own SkandiHus apron, tool kit and tote bag to use during the course—and take home with you afterwards. It’s our little way of welcoming you into the studio.

You’ll be working with our buff stoneware clay and have access to a wide range of tools in the studio.

What to Bring

Please bring clothes that can get dirty, creative energy and ideas!

We recommend bringing a towel, a bottle of water and lunch, or we can point you in the direction of some delicious local food options nearby.

We will send you our student handbook prior to the start of the course, with all the information that you need to know.

What if I miss a class?

Please note that we cannot accommodate students making up missed classes at other times, nor can we allow students to swap their classes to another date. Please therefore make sure before booking that you can attend all dates.

A small note on sustainability & values

We do our best to keep things gentle on the planet—recycling materials, using renewable energy, and keeping waste to a minimum. You can help too by reusing your course materials where possible and bringing your own packaging when collecting finished pieces.

We believe business can be a force for good—so alongside running joyful, creative studios, we’re committed to doing things properly:

– Paying all staff London Living Wage or above

– Keeping our spaces kind, inclusive and stress-free

– Supporting causes like the ARC food bank and Ella’s, a charity helping survivors of trafficking

– Donating profits from unclaimed pots to charity

– Planting trees each year with One Tree Planted

Where

SkandiHus, 11 Hatherley Mews, London, E17 4QP.

In the heart of vibrant Walthamstow, our studio sits on a charming cobbled mews and is a short walk from both Walthamstow Central and Queen’s Road.

Refund Policy

Our summer intensive courses are exchangeable up until 28 days prior to the start of the course. After this, your booking is non-refundable and non-exchangeable.

We’re a small, ethically run business - which means we pay our lovely team properly and keep our classes as accessible as possible. To make that work, we can’t offer refunds with less than 28 days notice, so please do a happy little calendar dance before booking to double-check your dates.

That said, life happens! If things go sideways:

🤍 Inside 28 days? No swaps, but you’re welcome to gift your spot to a mate or family member (spread the clay joy!).

Why so strict?
Each weekend, we get numerous last-minute change requests. If we said yes to all of them, we’d have to choose between cutting staff wages or hiking prices - and both options would make us really sad. By sticking to this policy, we keep things fair, keep our team happy, and keep our studios thriving.

Thanks for understanding - now let’s get making! ✨🤍✨
